The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycling route surrounds Jerusalem.

The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It is located in southern Israel within Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest.  נווה פריצקי Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists attended a ceremony to mark the opening of the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.



"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive city for tourists due to its rich past. Elkin stated that, in addition to its rich history the modern tourist industry is incorporated into Jerusalem's city. "The inauguration of this tunnel is another part in the development Jerusalem. It transforms the city into an attractive tourist destination for all types of audience throughout Israel and around the world."

Elkin who is in charge of the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in the city's tourism growth and the development of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that connect the rich history of Jerusalem to its future. I encourage cyclists to take advantage of a an attractive, well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the distinctive scenery of Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry Elkin's Ministry Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality, and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the idea to alter the notion of transportation in Jerusalem," Elkin said. "The new tunnel that connects to Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and ones that are paved in its areas. The goal is to encourage cycling among its residents and promote the green movement in the capital."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer the main sewer line toward Sorek's purification plant.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers as well as modern security and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for people to walk through throughout the year.

Kerem Tunnel Kerem Tunnel provides access to special recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the Biblical aquarium and zoo as well as the natural springs of historical significance Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
