The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is opened as part the 42-kilometer cycle route which runs through the capital.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entry is located within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin and Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and hundreds of cyclists were present at a celebration to mark the opening of the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Jerusalem was a popular tourist destination because of its rich past. Nowadays, aside from its rich history it also has modern tourism," Elkin said. "The inauguration[of] the tunnel is an additional aspect of the development Jerusalem as well as it's transformation into an attractive tourist destination for everyone in Israel as well as around the world.

Elkin's ministry, which was also headed the project alongside Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels annually throughout Jerusalem's tourism and in creating exciting attractions and ventures which connect the glorious historic past of our eternal capital and its future." I invite cycling enthusiasts to join us and take a ride along an up-to-date and well-maintained cycling route that takes in the unique nature of Old Jerusalem."


Elkin's Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 to the project. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the goal of changing the concept for transport throughout Jerusalem.  נווה פריצקי "The new tunnel that connects to Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and ones that are paved in its neighborhoods. The goal is to promote biking among the residents of Jerusalem and encourage the green transport revolution in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 to move the main sewer of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

Construction of roads, the installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are just a few of the ongoing projects to make the tunnel safer for all seasons.

The Kerem Tunnel gives you access to a variety of recreational sites, such as Ein Kerem Neighborhood, the Biblical Zoo and Aquarium and also historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh or Ein Laban.
