The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest bicycle tunnel, has been opened as part a 42-kilometer cycle route that is a loop around the capital.

The tunnel is located along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza route. The tunnel's southern entrance is below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists attended a ceremony to mark the opening of the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist destination due to its rich past. Elkin stated that, today, apart from its historic treasures, it also incorporates modern tourists. "The opening of the tunnel project is a different aspect of the growth of Jerusalem as well as it's transformation into an attractive tourist destination for all types across Israel as well as around the world.

The ministry of Elkin, which also in charge of the project together with Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds and millions of shekels each year in all aspects of Jerusalem's tourism industry and is involved in developing innovative attractions and ventures, that connect the magnificent historical history of our capital city and its future." I encourage all cyclists to visit and enjoy the contemporary, well-maintained road which overlooks Old Jerusalem.

The project was financed by the Elkin's department as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stressed that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is the central instrument to achieve the dream to change the way we think about transport in Jerusalem." "The tunnel, which is being constructed to connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing bicycle paths and those that will paved in its areas. It is intended to encourage cycling among its residents and promote the green revolution in transport in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure Tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Kerem Tunnel Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreation areas, like Ein Kerem, a neighborhood which has a Biblical aquarium and zoo and historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
