The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is opened as part an extensive cycle path that is a loop around the capital.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It is located in southern Israel located in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a major tourist attraction due to its rich history. Elkin stated that, today aside from its historic treasures, it also incorporates modern tourists. Elkin's Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million for the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said the fact that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to redefine the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem." "The new tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing cycle routes within the city, as well as those that will be constructed within the different neighborhoods. The tunnel is intended to encourage bicycle riding within its inhabitants, and promote a green transportation revolution in Jerusalem."

In the 1990s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to transfer the main sewer line of Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now utilized as an infrastructure tunnel. It also houses the fifth water line to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.
