The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique ride and hiking experience which is loved by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem, the capital city.

It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban and its northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a kilometer from the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin and Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and hundreds of cyclists were present at a celebration to inaugurate the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Jerusalem was a sought-after tourist destination due to its rich and fascinating historical. Elkin stated that today, in addition to its historical treasures the tunnel construction project incorporates modern-day tourism. "The inauguration[of] the tunnel project is a different element of the progress of Jerusalem and its transformation to an attractive tourist destination for all types throughout Israel as well as around the world.

Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the development of all aspects of Jerusalem's tourism and also in the development of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that link the fascinating history of our capital city's eternal past to the future of Jerusalem... I would like to invite cyclists to ride along a a well-maintained, modern cycling route overlooking the unique landscape of Old Jerusalem.

The project was financed by the Elkin's Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.



Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the idea to change the way of thinking and transport throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel, which connects to the long Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing bicycle routes in the city as well as those that are paved throughout the city's neighborhoods with the aim of encouraging cycling among its residents and its visitors and in promoting the green revolution of transportation in the capital city."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line to Sorek's purification plant.

Road construction, installation , and testing of safety and electrical systems are just a few of the ongoing works to ensure the tunnel is safe throughout the year.
